News report on Holi celebration at HTW, Pewaukee

On Friday Feb 26 2010 evening, more than 350 members of Indian community around Wisconsin, participated in the Holi Festival (Festival of colors) Celebration at Hindu Temple of Wisconsin, organized by Hindu Temple of Wisconsin.

The evening program started around 6:30 PM with Holika Dahan, where people gathered around fire outside in the parking lot of the temple. After Holika Dahan, Abhir and variety of cultural programs followed by dinner. We will provide the details of the cultural programs shortly. Meanwhile view the phots and video clips.

The main day, Holi, also known as Dhulheti, Dhulandi or Dhulendi, is celebrated by people throwing coloured powder and coloured water at each other. Bonfires are lit the day before, also known as Holika Dahan (death of Holika) or Chhoti Holi (little Holi). The bonfires are lit in memory of the miraculous escape that young Prahlad had when Demoness Holika, sister of Hiranyakashipu, carried him into the fire. Holika was burnt but Prahlad, a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu, escaped without any injuries due to his unshakable devotion. Holika Dahan is referred to as Kama Dahanam in Andhra Pradesh.

A new Indian and Pakistani Grocery Store Rice 'n' Spice opened in Brown Deer

Yesterday Barath Kumar and Vidya Bharat with the presence of family and friends opened the Rice 'n' Spice, an Indian and Pakistani grocery store in Brown Deer which was a longstanding need of community in the north side of the greater Milwaukee area. Opening an Indian grocery store in Brown Deer area was a top priority for Bharat’s to serve the needs of large and growing Indian and Pakistani community in that area.

Rice 'n' Spice will offer a wide selection of Indian and Pakistani spices, variety of Rice, fresh vegetables, cooking pastes and ready-to-eat entrees. "We will find out from people what they want and we get them fresh," said Mr. Bharat Kumar in an exclusive telephonic interview with WisIndians.com.

"I think it's a useful addition to the community," one community member residing in north side said over the phone. Also, the store's location will be a huge draw, he said.

Review: All vegetarian chats and Indian food at Indian Bazaar, Milwaukee

Couple of weeks back we have announced that Indian Bazaar in Milwaukee opened an all vegetarian chat house inside their grocery store. It’s a new (and slightly less formal) incarnation of a popular Indian chat houses in America.

What you get in this new restaurant is great food with very authentic taste. I have been going back to this restaurant for last few weeks since they opened. One of my favorite dishes is Gobhi Manchurian...oh! Water is coming out of my mouth while writing this. While I was there I heard good comments from others on variety of food like Dosa, curries and more. Service and ambiance was not very professional, but value of money is very high and this is a must go place if you are craving for authentic Indian fast food. They have place for @ 30 people at one time.

One of the best places to go for authentic Indian food!!! I love the flavors at Indian Bazaar restaurant. They have cook from south India and from north India, so you can expect tasty food from both sides of India. Being Indian, I like the fact that the food is absolutely authentic and healthy (not submerged in loads and loads of oil). Being a vegetarian and having more than 40 items with authentic taste to choose from is really a dream come true. You won't be disappointed, your stomach will be happy and your wallet won't be completely empty... I would totally recommend the place to others.

It’s definitely worth stopping by if you find yourself in this corner of town.

News Report on Deepavali Celebration by Milana Kannada Koota Members

On Saturday, Nov 07 2009 evening more than 270 members of Milana Kannada Koota and Indian communities around Wisconsin, participated the Deepavali Celebration event at the auditorium of Hindu Temple of Wisconsin, organized by Milana Kannada Koota.

The evening program started around 5:30 PM with get together hours to meet and greet members. The dinner started @ 6:30 PM and catered vy Dakshin Indian Cusine of Schaumburg, IL. The items for the dinner were Medhu Vada (with Chutney/Sambar), Veg.Cutlet, Naan, Veg. Kurma, Mirch Ka Salon, Veg.Biriyani, Rice, Saru, Mysore Pak, Rasmalai and many more. It was an line of South Indian items which was well received by the members of the community.

The cultural programs started with Instrumental by Seema Siraj accompanied by Neha Shetty. Master of the Ceremony (MCs) of the evening were none other than Aravind Mokhashi and Manju Murthy. Both were very successful in conducting the programs while keeping the audience at high alert and creating warm environment for the participants.

The program of the evening was the Baro Krishnaiah Dance- Suraksha Kodgi(3 years) and Radhika Srivastava. Choreographed by Guru Kripa Bhaskaran (Natyarpana). Click here to view the video clip of the same. First time in the history of the Milana Kannada Koota, a Standing Ovation was given to a performer. This three years old kid acted as Baby Krishna in the dance and most of the audience felt that the real Krishna came from Udupi to Milwaukee to give the blessings to them. Excellent performance by the Radhika in the dance where the co-oridination between these two were just amazing. I don't have any more words to explain this dance...watch the video and I am sure you will feel the same.

Natyarpana Dance School students led by Sharadhi Madhusudan performed Shiva Tandava which was well received by the audience.

Dr. Uma Suri welcomed the eminent artists and the audience. Dr. Kadri Gopalnath was very excited to come to Milwaukee and perform as they all want to extend their reach beyond bigger cities. He was accompanied by Kumari. A. Kanykumari on Violin and Sr. B. Harikumar on Mridangam.

The concert commenced with a refreshing Vathapi Ganapathim in raga Hamsadwani. Followed by one of the five gems of Thyagaraja the Pancharathna Kritis, namely, Enda ro Mahanu Bhavu. Ms. Kanyakumari violin was absolutely fantastic along with the saxophone made the audience long for more of it. The thaniyavarthanam by Sri. B.Harikumar was rollicking and the audience enjoyed every beat of it.

The main piece was Mokshamu Galada, where the trios, stunned the audience as he played with the saxophone to create sounds that were absolutely incredible. Followed by Mira Bhajans and Tulasidas renditions and devotional songs from Thirupugazh. His Magudi, on the raga punnagavarali was a delight. He also entertained the audience with his Cine rendition from the film Duet. The concert concluded with the mangalam song one of Dr. Kadri’s ever favorite Bhagayada Laksmi Baramma. The concert was a great success to the community and the Rasikas are wishing to have more of this kind.

Dr. Uma Suri thanked the artists, the sponsors, the volunteers, the promoters and the great audience to conclude the event.

Kadri Gopalnath (born 1950) is an Indian saxophonist and one of the pioneers of Carnatic music on the saxophone.

Kadri Gopalnath was born in place called Kadri, in Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka. He acquired a taste for music from his father Thaniappa, a nadaswaram vidwan. Young Gopalnath once saw the saxophone being played in the Mysore palace band set. Thrilled on hearing the vibrant tone of the saxophone, Gopalnath decided to master it. It took him nearly 20 years for him to conquer the complex western wind instrument and he was eventually crowned as the "Saxophone Chakravarthy".

Awards, titles, & tributes

Titles and honors have come his way, the most cherished being the Asthana Vidwan of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Pettam, Sri Sringeri Sharadha Peetam, Sri Ahobila Mutt and Sri Pillayapatti Temple.

Gopalnath has the distinction of being the first Carnatic musician to be invited in the BBC Promenade concert in 1994, in the Royal Albert Hall at London. The Asian Music Circuit, U.K, sponsored his recital.

Among his other distinctions are: Saxophone Charkravarthy, Saxophone Samrat, Ganakala Shree, Nadapasana Brahma, Sunada Prakashika, Nada Kalarathna, Nada Kalanidhi, Sangeetha Vadya Rathna, Karnataka Kalashree in 1996, Vocational Excellency Award from the Rotary of Madras, Tamil Nadu State Award “Kalaimamani” and Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in 1998.

He received an honorary doctorate from Bangalore University in 2004.

The 2008 album Blue Rhizome by the New Quartet features a tribute to the saxophonist called "Gopalnath," composed by Karl E. H. Seigfried.

News Report on Deepavali Celebration by Greater Milwaukee Tamil Sangam Members

More than 150 members of Greater Milwaukee Tamil Sangam members gathered into Auditorium of Pewaukee High School to participate in the celebration of Deepavali festival. Deepavali (Diwali) is the festival of lights and one of the most celebrated festival in India irrespective of the region -North, South, East and West.

The word Deepavali literally translates as a row of lamps in Sanskrit. It is traditional for adherents of Deepavali(Diwali)-
celebrating faiths to light small clay lamps (or Deep in Sanskrit) filled with oil to signify good over evil within an individual.
During Deepavali, many wear new clothes and share sweets/snacks with each other. Some Indian business communities start their financial year by opening new account books on the first day of Deepavali for good luck the following year.

Every event Tamil Sangam is introducing new concept on the stage....this time they tried to involve the members on the audience to the program. MCs were calling members on the stage to give speech, act and announce the next program.

News Report on Bharatanatyam Arangetram by Mahalakshmi Srinivasan

More than 200 art lovers, relatives and friends enjoyed the Mahalakshmi Srinivasan’s (Disciple of Kripa Baskaran) Bharatanatyam Arangetram on Sunday September 20 2009 which was held inside the Oconomowoc Arts Center, Oconomowoc.

The program started welcome speech by Mahalakshmi’s father-in-law. The MC of the afternoon program Lakshmi Adaikalavan took the stage and gave details of today's program.

Mahalakshmi started her program with Pushpanjali, a traditional invocatory dance where the dancer presents an offering of flowers to salute God, the Guru, Mother Earth and the audience before commencing the actual dance recital. This was an excellent performance by Mahalakshmi in which she demonstrated her confidence in continuing the today's program.

MC - Lakshmi gave brief introduction about Arangetram and its importance. She also explained how a dancer prepares himself/herself for the Arangetram to achieve a milestone in his/her career.

Mahalakshmi moved on with the Shankara Shri Giri- a dance to Lord Shiva (Nataraja). Musical Interlude by orchestra team was an excellent performance. Mahalakshmi finished the one of the lengthy program of the today’s event ‘Varnam’ without any tiredness. The Varnam is the centerpiece of a Bharatanatya recital and exhibits in full measure all of the elements of this beautiful dance form. There was a small break for tea/coffee/soft drinks and snacks.

After the break, Mahalakshmi performed two more dances including the Dasavataram, to demonstrate lord Vishnu’s 10 incarnations. Mahalakshmi received her certificate of completion by Guru Kripa just before the Thillana.

MC Lakshmi introduced the orchestra team to audience.

Mahalakshmi 's today's performance concluded with Tillana and Mangalam. Tillana is the concluding item in a Bharatnatyam recital and is a testimony to the dancer’s talent, stamina and rigorous practice.

News report on Natyarpana Dance Company 2009 Annual Show "Yaatra"

Yesterday (Sunday, June 07, 2009) the New Berlin West Performing Arts Center auditorium was filled with classical dance lovers, parents and friends who came to watch the 'YAATRA" A annual show from Wisconsin famous Bharatanatyam dance school NATYARPANA (dance teaching locations in Brookfield and Madison).

Another great show by Guru Karipa Bhaskaran and her disciples. More than 100 students of NATYARPANA Dance Company showed their talent and successfully spread the taste of Bharatanaytam to the audience.

This 3 ½ hours (3 PM to 6:30 PM, with a break of 15 mins) long annual showcase program was full of classical dances (16 in total) by various current and previous students of Guru Kripa Bhaskaran. Guru Kripa herself entertained audience by two dances (along with her disciple Josna Haritha) during the program.

The dance program started with prayer to lord Ganesha sung by Vanitha Suresh and ended with Mallari Dance (a very rhythmic dance where devotees carry the god on their shoulder and pay their respect).

News report on the Kannada hilarious play “Neenaanadre Naaneenena”

Shakespeare’s 'Comedy of Errors' comes to Milwaukee

Milana Kannada Koota of Milwaukee had the honor of hosting one of Shakespeare’s famous comedies here as a Kannada adaptation by the well known theater group 'Sanket' which is currently touring the United States. The play was performed at the Hindu temple auditorium on the evening of Friday, May 8^th. This hilarious play 'Neenaanadre Naaneenena' (which roughly translates into 'If you are me, Am I you?') was performed by popular TV artistes from Karnataka Sihi-Kahi Chandru, Jahangir and Srinath Vasishta in leading roles. The play was adapted, directed and acted by Surendranath popularly known as Suri among theater circles in Bangalore. For the packed auditorium of theater lovers and connoisseurs it was a laugh riot from start till end. The antics of the double twins Raya and Vatapi never failed to tickle the funny bones of the audience and the silence of the hall was only interrupted by the gaggles of laughter as scene after funny scene followed each other punctuated by smart one liners and some great acting. The final scene ties up the loose ends of the story almost in a cinematic style. It is a tribute to Suri’s writing and direction that a difficult story such as this was adapted so effectively as a play. It is timely indeed that Milana Kannada Koota staged this play by Shakespeare when the whole world celebrated his 445^th birthday just last month!

The evening started off with a social hour and a sumptuous supper cooked by Milana volunteers Anu, Madhu, Manju and Nanda Belur. As the invitees trickled in, they were greeted at the reception by Dr. Shivaram and Vidya Desai. A brief social hour was followed by dinner. Some say that Art is best appreciated on a full stomach. The organizers had realized this aphorism and rightly settled their audience down after making them eat! As the play ended, the whole cast was greeted with a thunderous applause. They were then introduced to the audience by Pavan Nagaraja and were feted with bouquets by Dr. Shivaram and Mr. Anil Murthy, the president of Milana. As the lights came on, and the curtains came down, the happy crowd jostled for space with the artistes, trying to recollect their old acquaintances with them.

Numerous photo sessions followed as families thronged to get their pictures taken with the cast. Sihi-Kahi chandru, the popular TV actor was a particular favorite. As the evening ended there was laughter all around and the satisfaction of having watched a superb enactment of a popular play by professionals was writ large on everybody! This labor of love by Dr. Shivaram and Pavan Nagaraja was a grand success indeed. They were ably assisted by Aravind Mokhasi and Arvind Kalyani. In this regard the final dedication of the evening should go to those generous sponsors of the Kannada community here without whose financial help this event would not have been possible. Events like these constantly remind us that Milwaukee has emerged as an important cultural stop for top artistes coming from India and our Milana Kannada Koota has been playing a crucial role in this emergence!

Report on "Water and Wind", The Jaltarag and Flute Jugalbandi

"Water and Wind", The Jaltarag and Flute jugalbandi was held on Friday 1st May at Cardinal Stritch University. Over 80 people attended the concert which was a huge success.

The jugalbandi between Shri Milind Tulankar on Jaltarang and Shri Sunil Awachat on flute was be a confluence of the most melodious of instruments. Shri Ramdas Palsule was on the Tabla.

Natyarpana Team at Vani Mahal Show, Chennai - A report

Review of chennai show:

Kripa Baskaran appeared on stage like a sculpture that came to life as she started her first piece for the evening, 'Ganga Stuthi', a tribute to the river Ganges set to a beautiful Ragamalika, Aadi taalam. It was most beautiful to see the dancer’s picture-perfect movements depicting the river. The novel opening led to a rich anjali set to Amritavarshini and Rasikapriya performed by Baskaran’s senior students. Krishna Smaranam was the pure nritta sequence which was packed with intricate, visually dynamic taalams and teermanams. Baskaran’s choreography of the pure nritta sequence and the aesthetic costuming deserves special applause. The Madhurashtakam was presented with interwoven jhatis set to a complicated pattern by Karaikudi Sivakumar.

Thillana, set to Behag and Charushtra ata taalam, was the finale of the evening, performed by Baskaran herself. Throughout the performance, Baskaran and her students maintained a rich form and grace which clearly exhibited the amount of hard work and passion they carry with them. The keynote speaker at Vani Mahal, the Sabha Secretary, spoke very highly of the dance troupe, saying that Kripa Baskaran’s show was one of the best shows that he witnessed in the season’s lineup. Guest speakers Sri. Rangaragan and Dr. Ambika
Kameshwar applauded Baskaran’s dedication to the art and her tireless work to bring out an exceptional quality of shows. Guru Ambika said, 'What better gift can a student give a teacher than what Kripa has done today. It is unbelievable to see the quality of her show and her students and I am so proud of her.' Natyarpana had a packed audience in Vani Mahal, Chennai. Baskaran and her students Radhika, Ramya, Sirisha, Anusha, Swathi and Josna performed four shows at the Chennai Music and Dance Festival. Baskaran performed with her student Josna of Nungambakkam Cultural Academy, and with company dancers at the Mylapore Fine Arts Club, Sevaa Sadan, Bangalore for World Dance Alliance and Vani Mahal. Ugadi (New Year) Celebration by Milana Kannada Koota

Members of Milana Kannada Koota of Wisconsin celebrated the Ugadi (from yuga+aadi, yuga is era, aadi means start. Ugadi is the new year's day for the people of the Deccan region of India.) yesterday at auditorium of Hindu Temple of Wisconsin, Pewaukee. Over 250 members of the community participated in this evening program filled with various cultural programs from adults, kids alike. There were songs, skit, dances and many more programs.

Milana dedicated this Ugadi for the teens of Milana. This is the first time in the Milana Kannada Koota’s history where teen were included to host the shows (teen MCs -Master of Ceremonies) along with the adult MCs on the same stage!!! Accordingly Prajwal and Sharadhi were the junior MCs of the evening program, along with Suraj and Manasi. Their performance was excellent as one can see smooth flow between them throughout the event.
